Thus says the LORD: “A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.” Jeremiah 31:15
The grief of parents in the Newtown area is beyond words. There is no real comfort at the moment, just as with the Old Testament narrative of Rachel weeping for her lost children. That prophecy foretold the slaughter of the infants in Bethlehem by King Herod. He slew any infant two years and younger to keep the prophesied New King from taking his throne. That new king, the Messiah, was then the baby Jesus. (Matthew Chapter 2)
Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones, and to the survivors who are struggling to cope. How could something like this happen? Why did God allow it to happen?
