How do I know if I have the Holy Spirit?

Does being filled with the Holy Spirit mean I am always happy not matter what?  Does it mean that I can understand scriptures without studying?  Is the Holy Spirit something God will give me if I ask for it?  How will it change my life?  What are the evidences that would indicate that a person is filled with the Holy Spirit?

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.” Rom. 8:16

Few doctrines are of more importance to God’s people than this one; because on it depends to a considerable extent their possession of “the peace of God which passeth all understanding.” (Phil. 4:7) How can they have “full assurance of faith” (Heb. 10:22) if they lack the witness of the Spirit testifying to their sonship–to their adoption into the family of God? Yet how few have the slightest conception of what is meant by this expression “witness of the Spirit,” or what kind of experiences should be expected and looked for as constituting the Spirit’s witness to our sonship.

Hi arimatthewsdavis, glad to see you made it another year. Some of us didn’t make it but Christ’s Ransom has saved us. Take Care Dear Ari, it is always so nice to hear from you. In your depths of sorrow you were able to be heard by God and decide quite quickly that Christ has saved you. Just love you, my brother and friend in Christ.
