Did Jesus Die on a Cross or a Torture Stake?

On Nov 5, former JWs will talk.  Part of their discussion will include the question: Did Jesus Die on a Cross or a Torture Stake?.  Find out more about this Nov 5 Webcast  and how you can participate here.

Why do Bible Students use the symbol of the cross and crown?   Would displaying a cross and crown on an elder’s podium be considered idolatry?  What about wearing a cross and crown pin?  In any case, was Jesus really crucified on a cross—or was it a stake?  Wasn’t the cross a shameful pagan Roman symbol?  Hasn’t the apostate Christian Church used the cross as in object of worship—kissing it, praying before it, etc.  All fair questions.  Read more hear in the article, Did Jesus Die on a Cross or a Torture Stake?

Cross or Torture Stake

If a Christian is “faithful till death” carrying his Cross, he will receive a “crown” of immortal life (Revelation 2:10).  This scripture is the basis of the Bible Student Logo of the Cross & Crown, also depicted on the cover of the Watchtower Magazine (upper left corner) until discontinued by J.F. Rutherford.

Alex, You’re wearing an idol. Worship in spirit and truth. No need for any symbolism. Your actions and deeds should be enough. The Bible is from Jah written by MAN. How do you know WBTS isn’t also? No one is getting rich and famous from it. So what would be the draw if it isn’t JAH?

You know it’s really interesting to see some objections about the ‘cross’ stated in a fashion to lead others into believing us Christians worship the cross.

I wear one sometimes around my neck as well. It simply is a reminder that my God performed the greates act of Love! Simply put, I worship the true and living God, Yeshua Hamashiach, and I. Know he is no longer on the cross. But, by his blood he rescued me, and we should never forget or be blown away by the immeasurable, inconcieveable, love in which he loved us.

If me carrying a cross or other christians carrying a cross means worship by way of love for it, then wouldn’t it be JW’s be guilty of worshipping WBTS by way of the hundreds of copies that keep in their homes? Or how they cannot read the bible through any other lense but publications from man?

    Just an observation

And it is painfully obvious that Jesus died on a cross!

First of all, in the secular realm, and in the bible scholar realm, we have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Romans used the cross at Jesus’ time.

Second of all, in Matthew it says that the sign was place above his head. Now, if his hands are tied up above his head, that means the sign was placed between his hands and his head, thus making highly unreadable.
Wouldn’t they have simply placed it above his hands??? Doesn’t that make sense?? But where was it placed?? Above his head!

    John 20:25
Unless I see in his HANDS the mark of the NAILS, and place my finger into the mark of the NAILS……..

Um, friends, how many nails were used in his hands? Obviously, 2

What description fits this verse better: hands bound above his head on a single pole requiring only 1 nail, or hands spread out on a cross requiring 2 nails?

Trust the word of God friends

And Peter, I’m sorry for offending you by my tone. I will be more respectful, just please leave my posts up.

    Thank you, Alex

    Dear anonymous,
We don’t believe in the trinity nor the binity. We agree on this website that Jehovah is the Father and Jesus is the son.
Alex will be setting up a blog, I think about the trinity.
Joey has his e-mail address on the ask Jacqueline tab. You make get in touch with him. He is discussing this with Alex.
The Trinity comment and Blog has been closed and is an information article because most persons coming to this website has it settled in their heart, that Jehovah and Jesus are Father and Son.
Please check the Internet for blogs on the trinity. Also perhaps you can blog on Alex site on this issue.
Thank you for your comment on this site. Hope that clears things up. Peace.
    In Christ,
    Jacqueline

One thing that annoys me is that people say that Jesus was Jehovah, that is NOT true! Why would Jesus say in prayer ‘To my FATHER IN THE HEAVENS’. Why did when Jesus was baptized the Holy Spirit come upon him and Jehovah said ‘This is MY SON whom I have approved’. Why would he say that if they were the same people! Before you right things on the internet, get your answers straight!!!

I say no one is higher than the father but equal to him is the only truth. Jesus is equal as the holy spirt is also therefor trinity is up held as three equal partners.

Thanks for sharing these Scriptures Joey. Jehovah has definitely honored His Son by giving him “all power…in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18)

I don’t think that Jon was saying the Father did not want the Son to be honored, but that even Jesus was not to be honored “over and above his heavenly father”. I woud have to agree with this statement, as Jesus said “My Father is greater than I” (John 14:28) and “I came…not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” (John 5:30, John 6:38). He made many other statements showing that his Father was above all, and he gladly followed the will of his Father. This is also shown by the Apostle Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 15:27 “…when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.”

Jesus was the only one who was worthy, as he was fully faithful to the Father, and was not born “in sin” and “shapen in iniquity” (Psalm 51:5) as all of our fallen race have been since Adam’s sin, which is why none of us could “redeem his brother nor give to God a ransom for him.” (Psalm 49)

I really appreciate your scriptural responses and thought put into them.
    🙂

Matthew7:21 (NASB) Not everyone who says to Me,’Lord,Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
HE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN WILL ENTER….
THE WILL OF MY FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN WILL ENTER
    THE WILL OF MY FATHER
    WHAT IS THE FATHER’S WILL??
    JESUS ANSWERS IN JOHN 6:40

John 6:40(NASB) “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son
and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise
him up on the last day”

philippians 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
(NASB) 6 who, although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality
with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made
    in the likeness of men.
8 Being found in appearance as a man,He humbled Himself by becoming
obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the
name which is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILLL BOW,of those who are in
heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
    glory of God the Father.
At the Transfiguration Luke9:35 Then a voice came out of the cloud saying, “This is
My Son,My Chosen One; listen to Him!”

All creatures worshipping the Lamb and He who sits on the throne:

    Revelations5:12,13
Rev.5:12 saying with a loud voice,”Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to
receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and
    blessing.”
Rev.5:13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under
the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying,
“To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb,be blessing and honor
and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

Jon, the Father wouldn’t mind, and Jesus during his triumphal entry on a colt into
Jerusalem when confronted by the pharisees to rebuke his disciples for praising
and shouting “Blessed is the King…etc”,said: “if these become silent, the
    stones will cry out!” Luke19:29-40 see also:Mt.21:4-9, Mk11:7-10, Jn12:12-15

plus many more describing the King being honored

It baffles me to know why people still after all these years refer to Russell, Rutherford and Franz, etc. These people are long dead, and are no longer here with us on this earth, and Jehovah’s society as well as the increase of accurate knowledge of the Biblical truths from God’s has moved on, Daniel 12:4. Why you keep beating the same drum with the same stick dont you get fed up with it or havent you anything better to disguss? Truely this shows to me that your in a rut and has got nothing substantial to add.
True we dont worship any man, past or presant, but do however respectfully acknowledge their contribution and the roll inwhich they were asigned to under-take by fulfilling Jehovah’s will. Psalms 40:6-8 Hebrews 10:7-8. All of which have been used by Jehovah to accomplish his purpose and the out working’s in relation to it for all of mankind, That also includes Christ Jesus, he would certainly find it most disconcerting of you or for anyone to worship him over and above his heavanly father and would kindly request other wise, by setting a pattern and a model for his foot-step followers to do the same as well. Matthew 7:21-23. Philippians 2:5-11.

    Joey,
In retrospect, I agree with you about wearing around the neck. It does not mean veneration. Sometimes it is hard to keep the old thinking and examples from watchtowers from sneeking in. I agree bowing and praying to it would be veneration. I stand corrected thank you for your close attention to detail. I also appreciate your comments on how Rutherford, Knorr and Franz would get this new light. They felt we were like the Jews always looking for some new truth or sign, instead of just sticking to scripture.
Hope we see you on the webcast tonite.
    In Christ and Peace
